简介:Apartheid’s legacy made Cape Town one of the most unwelcoming cities for Black South Africans, until a social movement for affordable housing challenged the status quo.
Miki Redelinghuys and Pearlie Joubert’s film tells the powerful story of housing activism through a community organisation who refuse to accept Cape Town’s failings in supporting its Black population. Nkosikhona (Face) Swartbooi was inspired to activism on seeing the treatment of his grandmother by her white employers. He eventually became a community member with the global social movement for affordable housing, Reclaim The City. The film witnesses his development from a passionate young activist to a father and longstanding community leader who is determined to see Cape Town build housing for tenants and workers. The road he and his fellow activists around the world travel on is an arduous one, but Mother City captures a sense of hope as the power of this movement for change grows.
