In a singular form that joins theatre and film, Christine Jatahy treats the subject of migration with infinite depth: “That which forces millions of individuals to be on the move. That which nationalism traps in refugee camps where life, suspended, elapses. No salvation for these men, these women, these children ripped from their ancestral homes with no promise of any future. A time that stretches endlessly where memories burn the heart, unable to move forward.”
The second opus of a diptych (Ithaca, Our Odyssey 1 is the first part) The Lingering Now touches on the distress of refugees seen through the prism of Homer and his Odyssey. For a year, Christiane Jatahy met with these exiles. From Palestine to Lebanon, via Greece, South Africa and Brazil, the Brazilian filmmaker and director collected the testimonies of real, contemporary Odysseuses. She gives them a voice in a living space, where the spectator is a participant in the artistic creation.
